Brewers Trade Codi Heuer To Orioles

Deadline day isn’t done yet. The Brewers and Orioles snuck in a trade just before the 5:00 pm Central deadline sending reliever Codi Heuer to Baltimore for cash considerations, reports Curt Hogg of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

This is already the second trade of the month involving Heuer, who went from the Guardians to the Brewers on Aug. 1 in a swap that included Blake Perkins, Craig Yoho and Bo Naylor. Two days later, the 30-year-old journeyman is heading to Baltimore to join the seventh franchise of his major league career. Heuer still has one minor league option remaining, allowing the Orioles to send him down without issue. It is unclear if he will be part of their bullpen or go to the minors.

Heuer, whom the White Sox drafted in the sixth round in 2018, debuted in the bigs two years later. While leaning on a 97 mph fastball, Heuer logged a pristine 1.52 ERA with 25 strikeouts and nine walks over 23 2/3 innings in 2o20. Heuer has not come close to approaching that level of success since then, but a large portion of the league has remained interested in his services.

After Heuer began 2021 with a 5.12 ERA in 38 2/3 frames, the White Sox shipped him and second baseman Nick Madrigal to the Cubs for closer Craig Kimbrel in a trade deadline deal. Heuer recorded a stingy 3.14 ERA in 28 2/3 frames after moving to the North Side, but he tallied almost as many walks (13) as strikeouts (17). It proved to be Heuer’s last action in the majors for three years, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and suffered a broken elbow in 2023. The Cubs then non-tendered Heuer, who settled for a minor league contract with the Rangers.

Heuer finally returned to the bigs last season, though he combined for just 4 2/3 innings between the Rangers and Tigers. After signing a minors deal with the Guardians last winter, Heuer made it back to the majors this year and threw 9 2/3 innings of 4.66 ERA ball. Heuer, whose fastball is now in the 95 mph range, owns a lifetime 3.76 ERA with a 20.9% strikeout rate, an 8.9% walk rate and a 44.9% ground-ball rate in 105 1/3 frames at the game’s highest level.
