For much of the second half, the Milwaukee Brewers have been the hottest team in baseball, complete on both sides of the ball.
Pitching has been the key, with Freddy Peralta, Quinn Priester, Brandon Woodruff and Jacob Misiorowski lining up as one of the league's best top four staffs, though the latter has struggled following a tibia injury (0-1, 9.58 ERA in three August starts).
At the back end, however, has been Trevor Megill, whose 30 saves are tied for third in baseball and second in the National League. Megill had a strong 2024, with a 2.72 ERA and 21 saves, but he has massively stepped up following Devin Williams' departure.
The Brewers announced Wednesday that Megill would hit the 15-day injured list with a right arm flexor strain. In a corresponding move, the Brewers added veteran Erick Fedde and transferred rookie Logan Henderson, also nursing a flexor strain, to the 60-day IL.
The Brewers will likely lean on Abner Uribe to lock down wins from here on out, which is far from shabby. Uribe has excelled this year, with a 1.71 ERA across a career high 63 games and 63 1/3 innings.
The bullpen for these Brewers is far from worn thin; also in the mix for the closer position include Nick Mears, Jared Koenig, Shelby Miller and Aaron Ashby.
Megill going down could explain his relatively shaky performance over the past month, as the righty pitched to a human 4.00 ERA and posted a blown save in three of his last four outings since August 16th. Prior to the 16th, you'd have to go back to June 29th for Megill's last blown save (11-for-11).
While Megill was perhaps trending in the wrong direction, Uribe most certainly has been trending upward. He has thrown 17 straight innings since July 12th without an earned run, though he did allow an unearned run to score on July 20th.
Uribe's 35 holds this season puts him in the major league lead by a large margin, sitting six over the Padres' Jason Adam.
According to Baseball Prospectus, the average absence for a flexor strain is 70 days, with a median of 49. As of right now, the Brewers look likely to have a bye into the NLDS, which would start October 4th - that is just 38 days away.
ESPN's Jeff Passan wrote that this injury "puts into question Megill's availability for the postseason."
Hopefully, the Brewers will get their electric arm back for what figures to be a deep run into October.
