Bronx Bombers Make Rare History in Seventh-Inning Surge

The New York Yankees hadn’t done this in the Bronx in almost 13 years.

With one thunderous inning Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, the Bombers blew the roof off a game and snapped a streak that had stood since the days of Jeter and Posada. The Yankees erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to crush the San Diego Padres, 12–3, marking their first double-digit frame at Yankee Stadium since July 30, 2011.

That kind of offensive explosion doesn’t happen often, obviously. When it does, it’s memorable.

The seventh started modestly enough, but quickly turned wild.

Jasson Dominguez led off with a double, Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells singled, and Trent Grisham walked to get things going. Ben Rice hit a two-run double. The Yankees kept adding traffic, and then in his second at-bat of the inning, Wells launched a grand slam—his first in the big leagues.

By the time the inning was over, 13 batters had come to the plate, and Wandy Peralta, a former Yankees reliever, had taken the worst of it from his old team.

The last time the Yankees scored 10 or more in an inning at home was July 30, 2011, against the Orioles in a first-inning defeat that included Swisher, Cano, and Jones.

After a frustrating loss the night before, this was a big rebound statement for the Yankees.

Ten-run innings are obviously rare. So doing it at home, in front of a Bronx crowd made it more fun for the Yankees.
