Bryce Harper Makes Admission After Loss to Braves

Bryce Harper had a chance to give the Philadelphia Phillies a late spark against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Instead, the veteran first baseman admitted afterward that a ball he hit down the line simply was not close enough to staying fair.

Harper went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as Philadelphia fell 5-3 at Truist Park in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series. The Phillies had a 3-2 lead entering the eighth inning before Austin Riley delivered the decisive blow.

When asked by reporters if he thought his ball down the line had a chance to stay fair, Harper gave a straightforward answer: “I did, yeah. It was close. Not close enough.”

The loss leaves Philadelphia facing elimination in a best-of-three series. Atlanta now leads 1-0 and needs one more victory to advance, while the Phillies must win Game 2 to keep their season alive.

The result was particularly frustrating because Philadelphia had managed to put together a comeback against Chris Sale. J.T. Realmuto’s two-run triple in the seventh gave the Phillies a 3-2 advantage, but Atlanta answered with Riley’s three-run homer off Jhoan Duran in the eighth.

Harper entered October after another productive regular season. He hit .269 with 29 home runs, 87 RBIs, a .380 on-base percentage and an .865 OPS over 162 games, according to Baseball-Reference.

Atlanta, meanwhile, finished the regular season 94-68 and won the NL East by six games over Philadelphia. The Braves also scored 742 runs and hit 204 home runs, giving them one of the league’s more productive offenses despite Riley’s down year.

Riley entered the postseason batting .219 with 19 home runs, 72 RBIs and a .654 OPS. His eighth-inning homer immediately changed the game and gave Atlanta a victory that puts Philadelphia on the brink of elimination.

Harper and the Phillies now have little margin for error. Philadelphia will need its lineup to produce in Game 2 after managing only three runs despite taking a late lead, while Atlanta can close out the series with another win at home.
