Bryce Harper Sends Message to Phillies Front Office on Extension

When former NL MVP Bryce Harper signed a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Phillies in 2019, there was a lot of debate over whether he could produce and justify the money he was given. Halfway through that contract, it’s clear he was the right man for the job.

In his six years with the Phillies, Harper has led them to the World Series, the NLCS, and the NLDS. He has also recorded 152 home runs and 455 RBIs and is batting .285. These impressive numbers have led to remarkable achievements.

He recently spoke to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal about being halfway through his contract and his thoughts on the future.

“Halfway through, that’s pretty crazy,” Harper said, “Obviously, I want to play longer than what I’ve got left. I think everybody knows that.”

Harper is 32 years old and will be 38 when his contract ends, but based on his current performance, he could play until he’s 45. He has already accomplished so much in his time in Philadelphia, and he still has six more years left to prove himself even more.

The veteran outfielder has been named to two All-Star Games while with the Phillies. In 2021, he was named to All-MLB Team 1, won the NL MVP award, and earned the NL Hank Aaron Award.

In 2022, he was named NLCS MVP, and this past season, he made All-MLB Team 2. During his time with the Phillies, he has also won three Silver Sluggers and two Player of the Month awards.

All these stats and awards in just his first six seasons with the team are incredibly impressive, and Harper knows it. When he discussed being halfway through his contract, he was sending a message to the front office that he wants to stick around a little longer.

Even though he will be 38 when his contract ends, that would make him tied for the fifth-oldest player in the league right now. With his skill set, he will still be a productive player at that time, barring any injuries.

The former first-overall pick in the 2010 draft has had an amazing career and is already looking forward to playing for as many years as he can. Because of Harper's elite play, the Phillies will most likely have to consider an extension.

As long as he keeps it up in the coming years, there is no reason why he shouldn’t get one.

His loyalty to the Phillies should also be appreciated, and if he is willing to stay, they should be willing to keep him. Harper will do his best to bring the Phillies more successful seasons and, hopefully, a World Series trophy in the next few years.
