The Baltimore Orioles fell to the Minnesota Twins 9-1 on Tuesday, falling to 13-21, good for last in the American League East.
The Orioles' rotation continued to show its weaknesses, with Cade Povich surrendering five runs over six innings, increasing his ERA to 5.55.
Povich, formerly a top Orioles prospect, has struggled to start the year, with the Orioles losing four of his seven starts so far.
One of the Orioles' marquee signings was 41-year-old Charlie Morton, who had a reputation of dependability heading into this season. Morton has been roughed up for a 9.76 ERA and 0-6 record in eight starts, and was demoted to the bullpen last week.
However, manager Brandon Hyde announced that Morton would start on Wednesday night against the Twins, which sent a wave of frustration among Orioles fans.
Hyde: "when we give up a bunch of runs early, we're not handling it real well"

Hyde, in the next breath: "Charlie Morton is starting tomorrow"https://t.co/dJwj1KPjgO
After a terrible loss Brandon Hyde announces Charlie Morton will start tomorrow. Is this team even serious? They are making it so obvious they don’t care at all! #Birdland https://t.co/8fizCzxIbF

The Orioles have experienced several injuries to pitchers, with team-ERA leader Zach Eflin and Grayson Rodriguez both going down with lat strains, though Eflin started a rehab assignment on May 4th. Lefty starter Trevor Rogers, out with a knee subluxation, began a rehab assignment in April 23, so reinforcements may soon come.
Baltimore is already without Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish for the year due to Tommy John surgeries.
Star players Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman have both had underwhelming starts to the year, with Rutschman beginning with a less-than ideal .211 batting average and .669 OPS, both career lows.
The Orioles were expected to contend in the American League East, especially with the Yankees losing Juan Soto in free agency and Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery. Instead, they find themselves in the cellar of the division, in desperate need of a change.
If change doesn't come quickly, the team may find themselves in a position where a shakeup becomes demanded in the midst of a thinning contention window.
