Cardinals Activate Masyn Winn in Tuesday Roster Moves

On Tuesday afternoon, the Cardinals announced they are activating shortstop Masyn Winn from the 10-day IL. As the corresponding move, outfielder Michael Siani is being sent down to Triple-A Memphis.

Winn exited a game against the Phillies on April 11 with lower back spasms and was placed on the IL the following morning. He made three rehab appearances in Memphis this past weekend, including a two-homer game on Saturday.

Winn got off to a slow start to the year but appeared to have figured things out before hitting the IL. He’s slashing .222/.314/.289 for the season but has eight hits and an OPS of .901 in his last seven games played.

The move to option Michael Siani to Triple-A doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, considering he’s only made 17 plate appearances this year and has primarily been used as a defensive replacement late in games.

Siani being sent down means infielder Thomas Saggese will remain on the 26-man roster. During Winn’s absence, Saggese made the most of his opportunity while splitting time at shortstop with Brendan Donovan. Through 12 games, he’s slashing an impressive .400/.389/.600.

With Winn returning to his role as the everyday shortstop, the Cardinals now have some overcrowding at second base with Saggese, Gorman and Donovan.

Donovan can play pretty much anywhere and has been the Cardinals’ best hitter to start the year, so he’s going to find his way into the everyday lineup, but it’ll be interesting to see how manager Oli Marmol goes about using Saggese and Gorman moving forward.

The Cardinals play the Braves in Atlanta tonight at 6:15 p.m. CST. Masyn Winn is starting at shortstop and batting ninth.
