Cardinals Announce Erick Fedde News Before Braves Series

The last time we saw Erick Fedde pitch was Sunday night against the Cubs, when he was pulled from the game after recording just four outs. In 1 ⅓ innings pitched, the Cardinals' veteran right-hander allowed three runs on two hits and four walks.

Fedde’s two starts before Sunday’s loss to the Cubs weren’t any better, as he allowed seven runs in each of them. Despite the major struggles, though, the Cardinals are giving him another chance this Saturday against the Braves.

In his last seven games, Fedde is 0-5 with a whopping 6.54 ERA. He has a 4.79 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 94 innings pitched this year.

Many Cardinals fans were hopeful the club would turn to 25-year-old RHP Michael McGreevy for Saturday’s game. McGreevy has a 3.21 ERA in Triple-A Memphis this year and has been pretty effective in his four appearances with the big-league club in 2025.

Miles Mikolas, who will start for St. Louis tonight, is pretty much in the same situation Fedde is in. Both pitchers are struggling mightily as of late and are set to become free agents at the end of the season. The only difference is that Mikolas is being paid over $17.5 million, while Fedde is being paid $7.5 million.

The Cardinals' starting rotation is bound to look different within the coming month, but it feels unlikely that St. Louis will be willing to eat both Mikolas and Fedde’s contracts. A potential answer as to why both Mikolas and Fedde are still being given opportunities to start is so that the Cardinals can try to squeeze any lingering trade value out of one or both of them.

After McGreevy, the Cardinals have guys like Tekoah Roby and Quinn Mathews who have had up-and-down years in Memphis. Some names that have been floated around as potential trade targets for St. Louis include Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly and Rays' Taj Bradley.
