The St. Louis Cardinals (72-73) have had a rollercoaster season but now playoff baseball seems out of reach as they enter Tuesday with a 4.5-game deficit in the NL wild card race.
With the organization leaning into a youth movement, shortstop Masyn Winn headlines a younger group set in place for future president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom to build around when he takes over in the offseason.
Winn is currently playing in his third season on the Cardinals big-league roster after making his MLB debut in 2023.
The 23-year-old has emerged as one of baseball’s best defensive shortstops this season, grading out with 22 Outs Above Average (via Statcast) with one of the strongest arms in the league (90.7 average miles per hour per throw).
Ahead of St. Louis’s game against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, Winn was scratched from the lineup moments before game time. The Cardinals later announced that Winn had been scratched due to right knee soreness with Thomas Saggese sliding over to his spot at shortstop and Jose Fermin entering the lineup.
“It is indeed knee soreness for Winn. Saggese slides to shortstop, Jose Fermin will bat ninth and play second base,” wrote The Athletic’s Katie Woo.

The fact that Winn’s knee has continued to bother him into September is concerning as it is news that it has once again flared up. The latest Winn revealed on his right knee soreness was that he took an injection during the All-Star break but it did not relieve any discomfort as this issue has bothered him for a majority of 2025.
Winn’s injury may have been the cause for his drop-off in offensive production as he’s batted .247 with a .629 OPS and just two home runs over 44 games in the second half.
With Winn likely a huge part of the Cardinals’ future, the organization may choose to remain cautious with how they approach his right knee soreness for the rest of the season.
