Cardinals Announce Trade After Loss to Reds

The St. Louis Cardinals made another roster move following Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds , trading right-hander Scott Blewett to the Athletics in exchange for cash considerations.

Blewett had been designated for assignment after the Cardinals selected Hunter Dobbins to the active roster. Rather than risk losing the veteran reliever on waivers, St. Louis completed a cash deal with the Athletics.

The 30-year-old made just one appearance for the Cardinals after opting out of his minor league contract earlier this season. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks against the Los Angeles Angels before being removed from the 40-man roster.

The move ends a brief stop in St. Louis for Blewett, who spent most of the season with Triple-A Memphis. He posted a 5.18 ERA across 48.2 innings before earning his call-up, where he flashed a fastball that reached 95 mph during his lone major league outing.

Blewett joins an Athletics club looking to add experienced bullpen depth before the trade deadline. The right-hander is fully healthy after previous elbow issues and is expected to report immediately to his new organization.

For the Cardinals, the trade creates additional roster flexibility as they continue reshaping their pitching staff. St. Louis entered Monday with a 53-52 record, sitting fourth in the National League Central after dropping the series finale to Cincinnati.

The Cardinals trail the third-place Pittsburgh Pirates by one game and remain in the National League Wild Card race, making every roster decision increasingly important as the trade deadline approaches.
