St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Richard Fitts suffered an injury while pitching for Triple-A Memphis and has been placed in the 7-day injured list. Fitts was diagnosed with a right lat strain, which should keep him out of play for at least a week.
The injury is of concern for the Cardinals, who have noticed Fitts' impressive showings in Triple-A. Fitts might not have made it to the starting roster for Opening Day, but his exceptional performances in Spring Training made him a top prospect to call up in case the Cardinals needed to activate him at any point during the season.

Fitts recorded a 1.76 ERA during his first three starts in Triple-A. In 15,1 innings played, Pitts also recorded 11 strikeouts.
Although Fitts has yet to make an official star for the Cardinals this season, he has already made his major league debut. Fitts made his first major league appearance for the Boston Red Sox in 2024.
In 2025, Fitts played 11 games for Boston, recording a 5.00 ERA and striking out 40 batters. The right-handed pitcher had to miss multiple games during the season due to injuries, something that has followed him to St. Louis.
In April 2025, Fitts suffered a right pectoral muscle strain, putting him on the 15-day injured list. A few months later, Fitts would be shut down for the rest of the season after dealing with biceps tightness.
Fitts found his way to St. Louis during the offseason after a series of trades saw him included in the Sonny Gray trade. The Cardinals knew that Fitts had potential, but with most of their starting pitchers already finding their spots for the 2026 season, the team chose to send him to Triple-A with the goal of calling him up some time during the season.
Now that Fitts might be out of action for a period of time, the Cardinals will have to look towards right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins, who was placed on rehab assignment for Triple-A Memphis for the start of the season.
The Cardinals will monitor Fitts' rehab and expect that his injury isn't a serious one. The team will look to call up Fitts once he is ready and is needed.
Although the Cardinals are sitting fourth in the NL Central, the division is very competitive, with first and last place only being separated by two games. The Cardinals are currently 8-7, but are on the midst of a two-game losing streak.
