With the cancellation of Wednesday night's Cardinals vs. White Sox game, St. Louis had a decision to make on the pitching end. Do you stay the course with the day off, or do you use the opportunity to get a veteran arm some rest in the depths of the campaign?
While Sonny Gray was originally slated to start game two of the series on Wednesday night, Cards skipper Oli Marmol decided against having him start either of Thursday's doubleheader games. Instead, it was announced that a familiar face will toe the slab for St. Louis.
Cardinals right-handed prospect Michael McGreevy will take the hill for game two of the doubleheader, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Veteran Erick Fedde, who was originally scheduled to pitch on Thursday anyway, will start game one.
RHP Michael McGreevy will start Game 2 and be the #Cardinals 27th man for the doubleheader Thursday.

RHP Erick Fedde goes Game 1 for #stlcards.
McGreevy has two previous appearances for the Cardinals in 2025. His first came on May 4th against the New York Mets, when he entered in relief and stole the show with a dominant performance. He finished with an impressive line of 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB and 5 K, ultimately earning the win in a 5-4 St. Louis victory.
His only other appearance this season came as a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers less than two weeks ago on June 8th. That game didn't go as well for McGreevy, as he allowed four runs across six innings of work and was tabbed with his first major league loss.
McGreevy made his major league debut last season and posted an impressive 1.96 ERA across three starts and one relief appearance for St. Louis. But, with a competitive starting rotation in the majors, he has spent most of his sophomore season in AAA Memphis where he can get more opportunities.
Even with the added stress of having to bounce between the majors and minors, McGreevy has been cruising in Memphis. Through 12 starts with the Redbirds, he has posted a 7-1 record with a 2.51 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 5.3.
McGreevy's start comes at a pivotal time in the Cardinals season. After exceeding expectations in the first part of the season, they have hit a speedbump and have struggled as of late. Among those struggling are some of the Cardinals' starters. In the month of June, right hander Andre Pallante has posted a 7.36 ERA in 14.2 innings across three starts and fellow right hander Matthew Liberatore has a 8.40 ERA across 14.0 innings in the same amount of starts.
If McGreevy can put together a good start on Thursday evening, he could force St. Louis to consider adding him to the roster. Whether that would include a spot in the rotation or just a bullpen addition to take some strain off a tenured Cardinals rotation would be up to the front office but the young righty could provide a boost to the team down the stretch.
