Despite losing a three-game series to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the St. Louis Cardinals are playing well this season. Now, a prospect will make his MLB debut this weekend against the Cincinnati Reds after the latest Cardinals’ roster move, according to the official team X account.
“Welcome to the big leagues, Bryan! We have recalled INF/OF Bryan Torres from Memphis (AAA). He will wear #39,” the Cardinals wrote on X.
Torres is hitting .339 with an on-base percentage of .452, a slugging percentage of .484, and two home runs, 16 RBIs, and 23 runs bases in 124 at-bats this season at AAA Memphis. He also has nine stolen bases. Significantly, he has been fighting to get the majors for over a decade since the Milwaukee Brewers originally signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2015.
The Cardinals have made multiple moves over the past week, and now Torres gets a chance at the big leagues. Though it has taken a while, his recent surge has given the organization confidence that he can make a difference. Torres is a left-handed hitter who plays catcher, outfield, first base, and DH, giving the Cards many options as to where they can deploy him.
Torres has elite bat-to-ball skills and usually posts strong OBP stats. Likewise, he understands the strike zone and can draw walks. The Cards will likely deploy him off the bench to start, and he can play multiple positions. Ultimately, he may serve as a left-handed platoon option. With the Cardinals getting production from young players across the board, Torres represents another player who can contribute immediately.
