Cardinals Make Roster Move After Hunter Dobbins’ Injury

The St. Louis Cardinals made another pitching adjustment Saturday after Hunter Dobbins exited Friday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies with right forearm tightness.

The Cardinals placed Dobbins on the 15-day injured list and recalled left-hander Quinn Mathews from Triple-A Memphis, according to the club’s official transaction log.

The move comes after Dobbins threw just one pitch in the fifth inning of Friday’s 7-6, 10-inning loss to Philadelphia. He had allowed three runs before leaving the game.

Mathews returns to the Cardinals after being optioned to Memphis on Aug. 18, just one day after making his second major league start against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed one run over four innings while striking out a career-high seven batters in that outing.

The 25-year-old left-hander has already moved between Memphis and St. Louis several times this season. He was recalled Aug. 17 before being optioned the following day, making Saturday’s move his third stint with the Cardinals this season.

Dobbins had been settling into a larger role in the Cardinals’ rotation. He entered Friday with a 3.67 ERA across 50 innings this season, including eight starts.

The injury also adds to a difficult stretch for the Cardinals’ rotation. Andre Pallante was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, meaning St. Louis has now lost two starters in the span of a day.

With Mathews back in the fold, the Cardinals will have another young arm available as they try to navigate a depleted rotation during their weekend series in Philadelphia.
