Cardinals Top Prospect JJ Wetherholt Impressing in Triple-A Amid Masyn Winn News

After being called up on July 7, St. Louis CardinalsNo. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt has been tearing up Triple-A pitching.

In eight games with the Memphis Redbirds, the 22-year-old shortstop has gone 11-for-29 with three doubles, a triple and four home runs. The outstanding performance at the dish in his first stretch of Triple-A games has set up Wetherholt's slash line at .379/.455/.966/1.421.

The former West Virginia Mountaineer's production has resulted in five runs driven in and 11 runs scored in the short span. With a .310 average in 70 games across two minor league levels, Wetherholt is knocking on the door of Major League Baseball.

The current blockade in the young middle infielder's road to the show are Cardinals' shortstop Masyn Winn and second baseman Brendan Donovan.

While a spot hasn't presented itself for Wetherholt just yet, Winn revealed to reporters on Wednesday that his knee is "jacked up" and "not okay," but that he "can't afford to sit out."

Despite dealing with the knee issues, the 23-year-old shortstop has been on fire at the plate out of the break, now hitting 7-for-21 (.333) since July 18, but his quote hints towards the fact that he knows Wetherholt is waiting in the ranks for any kind of shot at an MLB call up.

With the Cardinals struggling as of late, having dropped five of six games out of the break, the team is trending towards a situation in which it won't stand to gain anything except long-term knee issues from Winn playing through the injury in the very near future.

If the issue persists through the trade deadline, the decision to play through injury may be taken out of Winn's hands. In that case, Wetherholt could see MLB action as soon as early August, and the argument could certainly be made that he's done everything right to earn a call to the show in his first full professional season.
