Carlos Correa has not enjoyed much success on the field since he became a free agent at the end of the 2021 season. The three-time All-Star is back with the Houston Astros after a few years with the Minnesota Twins. Correa is undoubtedly delighted to still be able to play in the MLB, considering what he went through last year.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported on Thursday that Carlos Correa was battling for his life during a boating trip with his family at Lake Minnetonka last year. While swimming in the water, Correa was caught halfway between their boat and the shore. He was close to passing out, and his legs cramped. At the same time, his oldest son was clinging to him for dear life.

“Carlos Correa, who wasn’t wearing a life jacket, spotted a buoy floating in the water a few feet away and decided clinging to it would be his only chance of escaping Lake Minnetonka alive. His 3-year-old son, Kylo, who was wearing a life jacket, was on his shoulders and asking if they would be all right,” McTaggart wrote.

“Correa managed to reach the buoy but slipped off. He fell under the water and grabbed the chain, injuring his left hand. With Kylo’s weight on his shoulders, Correa switched to his right hand, then his left, and back to his right to stay above water. He yelled toward the boat for help. It was his last gasp.”

Fortunately, the cries from Carlos Correa reached the ears of his father-in-law, who frantically swam from the boat and threw him a life jacket. He barely managed to grasp it with his pinkie before rescuing himself and his son from drowning.

Near-Tragedy Left Lasting Impact Upon Carlos Correa

The harrowing incident, followed by the timely rescue, understandably left a deep impact on Carlos Correa. The Houston Astros infielder was always a religious person. Surviving unscathed from a certain disaster reinforced his faith in the divine.

“I was like, ‘From that moment on, I’m going to serve You,'” he said, as per Brian McTaggart. “I am going to keep my promise. And from that moment, I’ve been fully devoted.”

Following the near-death experience, Carlos Correa organized Bible study sessions each Saturday at his residence in Houston during the offseason. He first recounted his story publicly to a group of senior citizens at a retirement home in the city last December.
