Carson Benge is the real deal.

During the New York Mets' 7-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, Benge made franchise history by going 5-for-5 at the plate, including a home run. Benge became just the fourth Met rookie to collect five hits, including a home run in one game, joining Pete Alonso (2019), Alex Ochoa (1996) and John Milner (1972).

Benge also strung together an excellent road trip for New York. The rookie went 9-for-25 with three homers, including two against the Seattle Mariners on June 2 with three RBI.

His great week at the dish helped the Mets go 3-3 on their West Coast road trip and continue to make up some ground in the National League standings.

In 62 games this season, Benge is slashing .265/.325/.408 with seven home runs, 26 RBI, a .733 OPS and 10 stolen bases.

Things have not always gone smoothly for Benge in his rookie season. Despite remaining on the major league roster since the start of the season, the 23-year-old struggled at times. Benge went through an 0-for-16 stretch during the beginning of April, and 0-for-9 in the ensuing weeks.

But since manager Carlos Mendoza put Benge in the leadoff spot back on April 17 due to Francisco Lindor landing on the injured list, the young outfielder has seemingly looked more comfortable and confident at the plate.

Mendoza called Benge's offensive day on Sunday "pretty impressive."

The Mets and Benge will now enjoy this win and the flight back home to New York and get ready to host the St. Louis Cardinals with the first of three beginning on Tuesday.

The Mets are now 29-36 on the season and in last place in the NL East. However, they're five games back of the final Wild Card spot in the NL.
