The Chicago Cubs made a noteworthy move on Saturday as they continued their series against the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field. While the team was focused on the on-field action following a tough 5-2 loss the night before, front office news broke that added some excitement to the weekend.

The organization officially signed first baseman Myles Bailey, their supplemental second-round pick from the recent MLB Draft, to a $1.9 million contract.

Bailey, who played his college ball at Florida State, caught the Cubs’ attention with his standout raw power. Drafted 75th overall, he was viewed by many as one of the top power threats available in the entire class, despite sliding a bit due to an injury that limited his playing time this past season.

Before breaking his ankle on a slide, the big 6-foot-4, 257-pound slugger had been tearing it up, launching 13 home runs and posting an impressive .913 slugging percentage in just 26 games. Scouts also noted his surprising athleticism for a player his size, which could make him even more intriguing as he develops.

The signing came in above the slot value for that pick, which was around $1.12 million.

According to reports, the Cubs were able to allocate extra money here after some savings elsewhere in their draft class, a common strategy teams use to land high-upside talents who might have been undervalued on draft day.

Fans and analysts have been buzzing about Bailey’s potential ever since the Cubs called his name. Many highlighted his tape, including monstrous home runs that traveled over 460 feet with exit velocities pushing 118 mph.

There’s a real sense that if he can stay healthy and refine his game, he could become a force in the middle of a lineup down the road. For now, he’ll likely begin his professional journey in the minors, where the focus will be on building back from the ankle issue and adjusting to pro-level pitching.

On the big-league side, the Cubs headed into the weekend sitting comfortably in second place in the NL Central with a 54-43 record.

They’ve shown some consistency at home and remain right in the thick of the division race as the second half of the season unfolds. Meanwhile, the Twins came in around .500, battling it out in their own division and looking to spoil the Cubs’ home stand.

This kind of draft signing doesn’t always grab headlines right away, but for Cubs fans hungry for the next wave of talent, landing a power bat like Bailey feels like a step in the right direction.

It’ll be fun to track his progress through the system and see how quickly he can make an impact. In the meantime, the focus shifts back to the current roster trying to string together wins and climb the standings.
