Chicago Cubs execute their 2nd trade of the new year

Miles Mastrobuoni is heading to the Seattle Mariners and he has been added to their 40-man roster.  Mastrobuoni is the second infielder that the Mariners have acquired this week as they previously signed Donovan Solano.  In return the Cubs acquired cash.

Despite being capable of playing numerous defensive positions, including second base, third base, shortstop, and outfield, Miles Mastrobuoni never had a clear path to playing time with the Cubs.  Whether it was Nico Hoerner securing second base, Dansby Swanson signing on to play shortstop, or a mix of Patrick Wisdom, Christopher Morel, Jeimer Candelario, Isaac Paredes, and now Matt Shaw at third base, there was always someone ahead of him on the depth chart.  

The Seattle Mariners may provide Miles Mastrobuoni with more playing time

As a new member of the Seattle Mariners, Miles Mastrobuoni has a real shot at earning playing time as an infielder.  He will be competing with players such as Dylan Moore, Donovan Solano, and Leo Rivas for time at either second base or third base.  Mastrobuoni has had success in the upper minor leagues, slashing .278/.371/.434 from 2022-2024, and he should get a fair shot to prove himself with Seattle.
