Chicago Cubs Land Brutal Injury News Amid Winning Streak

The Chicago Cubs keep rolling through the stretch run of the season, but one piece of their roster puzzle remains missing, and it is not coming back as soon as many had hoped.

Matt Shaw, the versatile young hitter who has shown flashes of real promise, remains sidelined with a left-hand sprain. The injury landed him on the 10-day injured list at the end of June. It marked the second time this year Shaw has spent time on the shelf after an earlier stint for a back problem.

Manager Craig Counsell offered the latest update Friday, and it was not the kind of news the clubhouse wanted to hear. Shaw is still weeks away from returning, Counsell told reporters. Swinging a bat at full speed continues to give the 24-year-old trouble.

Counsell made clear there has been no setback, yet the recovery process is simply taking longer than the organization first expected.

The timing feels especially frustrating because the Cubs have surged lately. A strong trade deadline haul and five straight wins have put the team right in the thick of the National League Central race. They sit just 4.5 games behind the division leaders and hold a comfortable 6-game cushion in the race for the top wild-card spot.

Shaw’s absence has forced the coaching staff to dig deeper into the depth chart. Rookie Pedro Ramírez has stepped up in a big way. Over 43 games he is hitting .300 with a .355 on-base percentage and .445 slugging mark, good for an .800 OPS. Counsell has given him increasing playing time, and the youngster has responded by looking more and more comfortable at the major-league level.

Many around the team now wonder whether Ramírez has played his way into a longer stay even after Shaw eventually returns. The rookie’s bat has been too productive to simply send back to the minors without serious consideration.

The front office also addressed the situation at the trade deadline by acquiring outfielder Tyrone Taylor as part of the deal that brought pitcher Clay Holmes to Chicago. Taylor has handled left-handed pitching especially well this season and can play all three outfield spots. His presence gives the Cubs another layer of flexibility while they wait on Shaw.

Still, the club would rather have Shaw available for the critical weeks ahead. His combination of switch-hitting ability and defensive versatility makes him the kind of player managers love to have on the bench or in the lineup during a pennant chase.

Counsell and the medical staff have emphasized patience. They do not want to rush Shaw back and risk another setback that could cost him the rest of the season. Full-speed swings remain the biggest hurdle, and until that feels natural again the third baseman will stay on the sidelines.

The Cubs have shown they can win without him. Their record over the past two months ranks among the best in baseball. That success has bought them time, but it does not erase the desire to get their young talent healthy and contributing once more.

Shaw’s first injury of the year already interrupted what had been a promising start. The hand sprain has now stretched that interruption far longer than anyone anticipated. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see him back in a Cubs uniform, rounding the bases or making plays in the field.

For now, the focus remains on the players who are healthy and producing. Ramírez, Taylor and the rest of the roster have carried the load. The calendar is moving into the final stretch, and every win carries extra weight.

When Shaw does return, he will find a team still firmly in the postseason conversation. Whether that happens in two weeks or closer to a month remains unclear. Counsell’s comments Friday left little doubt that the wait continues.

The organization will keep monitoring his progress closely.

In the meantime, the Cubs will keep playing the schedule in front of them, hoping the next update on their young infielder brings better news than the last one.
