It has been over one week since the Chicago Cubs last won a baseball game. Last weekend, they lost their series against the Chicago White Sox, and they followed that up by losing six straight games at home. Enter last week Monday, they had won 15 straight games at Wrigley Field.
Earlier in the year, the Cubs had two separate 10-game winning streaks. They rode those streaks to a first place standing in the National League Central Division, too. Now, however, they have lost eight games in a row and sit in third place.
Prior to the start of the season, many picked the Cubs to win the National League Central. When they were on their second 10-game winning streak, many also ranked them as one of the top-two or top-three teams in baseball.
Even after losing their series to the White Sox, many publications still had them ranked in the top-five.
But now that they have lost eight games in a row, Bleacher Report dropped them all the way down to 15th:
“The Cubs are 2-12 in their last 14 games, and they have been held to three or fewer runs a whopping 11 times during that stretch, including four shutouts. They had won 15 straight at Wrigley Field prior to Monday’s loss to the Brewers, but this looks like a completely different team than the one that was 27-12 just a few short weeks ago. Can they steer out of the skid?”
“Can they steer out of the skid” is the question everyone is asking. Of course, the Cubs players and coaches will affirm that they can.
But there is so much going wrong in Chicago right now. They had to put yet another starting pitcher on the injured list and multiple players are mired in slumps.
Fortunately, there is still plenty of baseball left to play, and a lot can happen between the end of May and the beginning of October. But what the Cubs are doing right now is not working. Hopefully the lineup shuffles eventually work and the team adds a starting pitcher (or two) that can provide stability.
