It’s been a phenomenal season thus far for the Chicago Cubs, and a record-breaking one in many regards. This time, it was a feat not seen in nearly a century in their 11-0 dismantling of the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Through the first 90 games the Cubs have scored 10 or more runs on 16 different occasions. This hasn’t been accomplished by a Cubs’ team since the 1929 season when they did it 20 times in the same timespan with a team that eventually went on to lose the World Series four games to one to the Philadelphia Athletics.
In 2025 they did it twice in March before some teams had even played a game. Then it happened another five times in April and five more times in May. The team was slumping a bit in June and only broke it open twice. Sunday’s game was the second one in July, both within the three-game series against the Cardinals.
There are multiple components behind the big bats happening in 2025, the root of which is having one of the best Pipelines in the majors. Jed Hoyer deserves props. Moving right along, the Cubs also have one of the best managers in the league in Craig Counsell. He knows how to squeeze the most pop out a lineup. Additionally, so many players seem to be rejuvenated by the Kyle Tucker trade.

Meanwhile, the entire north side of Chicago is rejuvenated by Pete Crow-Armstrong‘s emergence, as evidenced by the constant “PCA” chants that sound off throughout the Friendly Confines on a regular basis. He’s achieved full-blown hero status and worked his way into the hearts of Chicagoans at the ripe old age of 23.
Pete’s third in the league in WAR, trailing only Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh. His offensive contributions alone have been a significant boost for the team’s early success. His slash line in 2025 is .272/.309/.550 with 23 homers and 27 steals. Needless to say, he’s stepped up his game.
Defensively he’s nothing less than a miracle man. When we look at players who’ve made the most catches with less than a 25% probability, he’s leading by a lot. He has nine of those. There is a three-way tie for second place with three. PCA also leads the NL with 14 defensive runs saved. It seems no doubt he’s in line for multiple Gold Gloves in his career. He’s completely on another level.
The Cubs are looking primed for their first playoff run since 2020. They’ve had contributions coming from all corners of the organization and some of them are the most pleasant of surprises.
