Another day, another brutal injury for the Cubs pitching staff . Edward Cabrera suffered a freak injury in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s game in Queens. Cabrera induced a groundball in the hole that Nico Hoerner made a nifty play on, and while scurrying to first, he stretched out to cover the bag. He immediately went down after the play was made.

It looked bad, and he had to be carted off the field. He had trouble putting weight on his left leg as he was helped by the trainers onto the cart. It was reported to be a left hamstring/adductor strain.
Per #Cubs Edward Cabrera left the game tonight with a left hamstring/adductor strain.

Cabrera, assuming he is hitting the IL, will join Cade Horton, Jameson Taillon, and Justin Steele as current starters on the IL with Matthew Boyd rehabbing. Cubs president Jed Hoyer said earlier that Steele is unlikely to start when he returns this year, per Bruce Levine.
Cubs boss Jed Hoyer told @mullyhaugh that he does not expect Justin Steele to be a starting games this season.Hoyer pointed toward a healthy 2027 for Steele. He did not rule out Steele helping in the pen at some late summer point. Listen to whole the interview on the Audacy app.

The rotation is now down to Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, Ben Brown, Javier Assad, and Matthew Boyd when he returns. Depending on the severity of Cabrera’s injury, the top three projected starters for the Cubs could be completely out of the picture.
It’s hard to put into words how rough these injuries have been. They cannot afford any more; they couldn’t really afford the injuries they already have. If they want to have a chance, they will have to add a starter or two at some point.
