The Chicago Cubs have been playing well throughout the opening month of the season after a terrible stretch. They have been one of the best offensive team in all of Major League Baseball, but saw one of their star players leave with an apparent injury. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what it means going forward for the Cubs.
The Cubs are in the midst of a game against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, but will be without shortstop Dansby Swanson. Swanson hit a two-run double and stole third base during the second inning. However, he would be lifted from the game in the bottom half of the inning as Nicky Lopez would enter the game at second and Nico Hoerner would shift to shortstop. Chicago would officially be replaced and the team announced it was due to a left glute cramp.
Swanson has been hitting the ball at a strong level throughout the season. He has a .783 OPS with six homers, 23 RBI, 23 runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. The 32-year-old shortstop has been hitting at a great level as of late, having a .304/.370/.565 slashline in his last seven games with his new hitting approach this year. Hopefully, this injury is nothing serious and is just cramps that developed throughout the first few innings of the game.
Swanson has played in all of the team’s first 30 games of the season, so having him out of the lineup is significant. It will be interesting to see what manager Craig Counsell decides to do with him for tomorrow’s game if there is no other injury.
