The Chicago White Sox have been the biggest surprise of the season in the MLB, and they might not be done turning heads before the end of the summer.
The White Sox have proven capable of battling the best teams in the league. Chicago defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-2 on Friday night before losing 7-1 on Saturday. The two teams will play for the series win on Sunday afternoon at Rate Field.
The White Sox will enter that contest with a 37-32 record, .5 games back from the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central. Chicago has a 2.5-game lead over the A’s for the final wild-card spot.
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the White Sox plan to be “aggressive” before the trade deadline, looking to add pitching help for a roster that’s on the precipice of making the postseason. However, Chicago does not plan to go all-in at the deadline, hoping to keep together a young core that has seen 12 players make their MLB debut this spring.
“The most stunning aspect of the Chicago White Sox’s breakout year with an AL-best 31-18 record since April 17 – is that they have already had 12 players make their major-league debut this season,” Nightengale wrote.
“They entered the week with 37 victories and a chance to eclipse their entire win total from 2024 when they set an MLB record for futility with a 41-121 record. They plan to be aggressive at the trade deadline in their search for pitching, but not at the expense of parting with any of their top prospects as they build towards the future.”
The White Sox have another key series coming up this week after playing the Dodgers on Sunday. They’ll travel to play the New York Yankees for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. It’s another measuring-stick series for Chicago before taking on the Cleveland Guardians at home for a three-game series beginning on June 22.
Those two series will tell us a lot about how the White Sox hope to keep the momentum from surprising spring going into the dog days of summer.
