The Chicago White Sox announced a series of roster moves before Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins. Korey Lee and Gage Workman started rehab assignments with Triple-A Charlotte, both of which began Friday. Outfielder Mike Tauchman will start his rehab assignment today, also with Charlotte.

But the big news—and the move White Sox fans have been clambering for over the last few weeks—is the promotion of first baseman Tim Elko. Chicago selected Elko's contract from the Charlotte Knights, and to make room for him on the 40-man roster, the club designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment.

Maton had recently returned to the club after the White Sox designated Bobby Dalbec for assignment. Dalbec cleared waivers and elected free agency. Maton now finds himself back in the roster blender.

In a separate move, the White Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Vargas off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. To clear space for Vargas on the 40-man roster, the team designated outfielder Greg Jones for assignment.

Elko Gets the Call

White Sox manager Will Venable spoke to the media following Friday night's 5–2 victory over the Marlins after reports before the game confirmed the club's intention to promote the night's first baseman.

Venable confirmed that Elko and Andrew Vaughn will be in the lineup for Saturday night's game. He did not, however, indicate who will play DH and first base.

Elko's addition is a welcome sight for Sox fans who have watched the right-handed hitter mash in Triple-A to the tune of an OPS north of 1.000

His presence on the active roster and in the everyday lineup will hopefully spark a group that has little—if any—power.

What's On Tap Next?

The playing time squeeze begins with Elko and Vaughn likely occupying first base and daily DH duties.

Lee seems destined for Charlotte, and with Workman out of options, a demotion, DFA, or trade will be required to retain him. Tauchman's return likely signals the end of the Joshua Palacios era.

Josh Rojas seems locked into regular work at second or third base, leaving Miguel Vargas, Lenyn Sosa, and whichever catcher isn't behind the plate to fight for at-bats.

Still, with substitutions, off days, and lineup shuffling, those players should still see semi-regular at-bats—at least until the next roster domino falls.
