The Chicago White Sox entered the playoffs with a bit of a predicament. They didn’t have a starting pitcher who could go deep into the game. Instead, Chicago relied on predominantly bullpen games throughout the postseason run.
Entering the 2027 season though, the White Sox will want to add some traditional starting pitching talent to their ranks. Hagen Smith, who was used as an opener, could be stretched out to start long-term. Players like Noah Schultz and David Sandlin, amongst others internally, will battle to make the 2027 rotation.
But in 2026, the White Sox starting pitchers were last in innings, via James Fegan of the Chicago Sun-Times. And yet, Chicago’s rotation held a 4.60 ERA during the regular season, ranking 26th. Outside reinforcements may be necessary for the South Siders to rise up the ranks.
General manager Chris Getz isn’t shying away from Chicago’s starting pitching need. He made the White Sox’s priorities clear entering the offseason.
Getz admited that Chicago’s need for starting pitching is, “a little bit more pressing.” Which makes sense due to how manager Will Venable handled the postseason. The general manager remains committed to give the White Sox an extra boost in the rotation department, via Fegan.
“We’re going to be as ready as we can when free agency opens,” Getz said. “And be able to pounce when need be.”
The 2027 free agency class is considered weaker than in year’s past. But there are still some top flight names available. Tarik Skubal will be on top of every team’s wish list. Players like Michael King and Casey Mize should get a sizable bag as well. Still, Getz at least seems prepared to spend when necessary.
The White Sox want to ride the momentum of their jump into the postseason. To do so, Chicago must improve their current pitching rotation situation.
