Chipper Jones blasts umpire Doug Eddings in ruthless social media post

Longtime MLB umpire Doug Eddings made several questionable calls during Saturday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, and no one was harder on him over it than Chipper Jones.

A video that was shared on social media showed a few different calls that Eddings botched in the Cubs’ 6-1 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich. There were a couple of called third strikes that were well outside the zone in addition to what appeared to be the wrong ruling on a check swing.

Jones shared the video on X and blasted Eddings. The Hall of Fame slugger said Eddings is one of the worst umpires in baseball.

“Not only one of the worst umpires in the league for going on 2 decades … but consistently one of the most confrontational. Toxic combination!” Jones wrote.

Eddings has been working MLB games since the late-1990s. He has worked 14 total postseason series, including two World Series. Eddings was part of the umpiring crew in the World Series last year.

Jones played in the majors for the Atlanta Braves from 1993-2012, so he had plenty of dealings with Eddings. He apparently does not have found memories of the games that he played in that were umpired by Eddings.

Eddings has had plenty of confrontations with players and managers throughout the years, which is by no means unique to him. Jones clearly feels that some of his blown calls are a pattern rather than the exception, however.
