Congratulations are in order for New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who managed to turn Chris “Mad Dog” Russo into a furious canine.
Russo blasted Boone on Wednesday morning amid the Yankees’ disastrous summer collapse. After holding first place in the AL East for much of the season’s first three months, the Yankees currently trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 6 1/2 games.
Despite pulling out a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon, the Yankees only have a 1 1/2 game lead over the Rangers and the Cleveland Guardians for the AL’s third and final Wild Card spot.
Russo specifically pointed to Boone’s controversial bullpen management in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss, when the veteran manager used struggling reliever Devin Williams in the eighth inning. Williams, who has blown two saves in the last week, immediately walked two and allowed the game-winning runs.
“The Yankees made a million trades,” Russo said. “Boone looked very confused in that dugout on what to do with the bases loaded and two out.
“And the Yankees’ season is collapsing,” Russo continued. “They’re in big trouble. They’re behind the Red Sox. They’re behind Texas. They’re behind the freaking Blue Jays. They’re behind everybody.”
At least Boone got “First Take” to talk baseball for once.
Yankees fans have ramped up calling (and we don’t simply mean to WFAN) for Boone’s dismissal. Although social media users have suggested the likes of Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez as potential replacements in recent days, there have been no credible reports about the Yankees potentially firing Boone.
The Yankees have not fired a manager midseason since 1990, when they promoted Stump Merrill to replace Bucky Dent.
