On Monday, the Reds announced that Simon Mathews will join Terry Francona’s coaching staff as the new assistant pitching coach.

Mathews spent each of the last two seasons as Cincinnati’s assistant coordinator of rehabilitation and pitching initiatives. In 2022, he was the rehab pitching coordinator. During the 2021 season, his first with the Reds and first as a professional coach, Mathews implemented and oversaw the organization's pitching program at the Dominican Republic Academy.

Mathews appeared in 71 minor league games in the Los Angeles Angels’ system from 2017-19, including stints at AAA-Salt Lake in both 2018 and 2019. He pitched collegiately at Temple University (2014) and Georgetown University (2015-17).

Mathews replaces Alon Leichman, who accepted a position as the Miami Marlins' assistant pitching coach in December.
