Cincinnati Reds Release Former First-Round Draft Pick

The Cincinnati Reds released former first-round draft pick Mat Nelson on Monday,

Nelson was drafted with the 35th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Florida State. The catcher never made it above Double-A Chattanooga.

Over five seasons in the minor leagues, Nelson slashed .205/.319/.351 with 70 extra-base hits in 298 games.

Other notable picks from the 2021 Reds' draft class are Jay Allen II, Andrew Abbott, Julian Aguiar, Blake Dunn, and Matt McLain.
