The Cleveland Guardians wrap up their three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks today. The Guardians won the first game 3-1 but dropped the middle game 6-5. Cleveland is 10-7 in August after starting the month going 7-2. They are averaging 4.2 runs per game this month while allowing 4.5 runs per game. Today, they selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Parker Messick from Triple-A Columbus, and he will make the start. To make room for Messick, they are designating right-handed pitcher Carlos Hernandez for assignment. Messick is the Guardians’ 12th-ranked prospect and the third-ranked pitc hing prospect.

The Guardians drafted Messick in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft. In 20 games this season at Columbus, he is 5-6 with a 3.47 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and 119 strikeouts in 98.2 innings. He has made 73 appearances with 70 of those coming as starts since joining the Guardians organization. Messick is 19-18 with a 3.33 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and 420 strikeouts in 354 innings.
Hernandez has pitched for three games this season, making 41 appearances, going 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA, a 1.66 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. In five games with Cleveland, he posted a 3.86 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and three strikeouts in seven innings. In 191 career big league appearances, he is 8-19 with a 5.14 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, and 265 strikeouts in 299.2 innings.
