The Colorado Rockies fired Hitting Coach Hensley Meulens Thursday afternoon. He was hired to the position in November 2022 and was fired after a little more than two seasons on the job. Special Assistant to the GM, Clint Hurdle, will serve as the team’s hitting coach for the remainder of the 2025 regular season.
Hurdle is a veteran that will bring stability to the Colorado Rockies. He managed the team from 2002-2009 and guided the Rockies to the National League pennant in 2007. Will the Rockies fare better at the plate with Meulens no longer in the fold?
It did not come as a surprise that Meulens was relieved of his duties. Colorado has gotten off to a miserable 3-15 start. The team’s offensive performance has been the main culprit for the poor start. They are 21st in batting average, 25th in home runs, and last in the league in runs scored. What could have sealed Meuelens’ faith is the team being shutout three consecutive games last week against the San Diego Padres. Colorado’s lineup is not a talented one, but the franchise expected better production from the unit.
Colorado returns to the diamond tomorrow night against the Washington Nationals. Hurdle will look to make an immediate impact on the team’s offense. The Rockies have nowhere to go but up at the plate.
