The Chicago White Sox knew that the stretch of games they are currently playing were going to be tough. After shocking many by winning consecutive series at home against the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers, they have dropped two straight games on the road against the New York Yankees.
Fortunately, they have not fallen out of first place in the American League Central Division because the Cleveland Guardians have dropped two in a row as well. At 38-34, the White Sox are miles ahead of where many thought they would be, and their young stars, such a Colson Montgomery, are a big reason why.
Montgomery burst on the scene last year following his mid-season call-up to the Majors. As a rookie, he hit .239/.311/.529 with 21 home runs and 55 RBI in 71 games played.
He has been nearly as good through 69 games to start the 2026 season, slashing .225/.319/.502 with 19 home runs and 44 RBI.
Last night, he hit his 19th home run of the season against New York. It was his 40th career home run, a milestone he has reached faster than any other player in franchise history:
Colson Montgomery reached 40 career home runs in 140 games, the fewest games to the mark in White Sox history
He hit his first homer on 7/22/25. Since that day, he’s second in MLB in home runs, behind only Kyle Schwarber (49) https://t.co/BlP8uvLUum

As one can see from the post above, not only has Montgomery reached 40 home runs faster than any player in franchise history, but he also has the second-most home runs in the Majors since he made his debut.
One might assume that Munetaka Murakami has a chance to break this mark if he comes back with enough games to play and continues to rake at the rate at which he was before he got hurt. Still, what Montgomery has been doing ever since last July has been nothing short of impressive.
