Corbin Burnes is showing why his six-year $210 million contract is going to be beneficial for the D-Backs for years to come.
Recently an unfortunate announcement came out that Burnes was going to miss his next start due to right shoulder inflammation. Burnes eventually did miss a start, though received a cortisone shot earlier in the week. It surely helped in last night’s outing as he mentioned his shoulder fatigue felt non-existent. Head coach Torey Lovullo speculated that Burnes might be on a pitch count coming back last night because of his injury. That thought eventually went away as Burnes entered the driver’s seat on Saturday night, as he took care of the Dodgers with ease.

In what was the best start for Burnes so far in his time in Arizona, he was able to pitch seven scoreless innings that led to a 3-0 victory over Los Angeles. Not only did he dominate on Saturday, but the opposing clubhouse also commented on how incredible his day was. The acknowledgement of his stellar outing should only help his confidence moving forward.
One of the biggest parts of Corbin Burnes’ game is his cutter, which has been a signature of his for years. He mentioned how time with pitching coach Brian Kaplan truly helped him focus on fixing some issues with his mechanics that would help refine his cutter.
“It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been able to say it felt like that. I think that was kind of a good sign.”

Burnes, so far this season, has a 2-1 record and is sporting a 2.95 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched. The Arizona ace has allowed less than three earned runs in each of his last four starts as his steady pace and consistency are exactly what the D-Backs were looking for when they signed him in the offseason. Arizona will be watching him for years to come, and nights like Saturday are hopefully just the beginning for Corbin Burnes during his time in the desert.
