With the Washington Nationals’ 2026 season in the books, the ball club has a superstar talent that could lead the team for many years at shortstop, C.J. Abrams, though there has been speculation around him possibly being traded this offseason. While many in the sports world ponder potential trades that the Nationals would make for Abrams, this MLB insider gives insight into the actual possibility of the 26-year-old being dealt.
Last season for Washington, Abrams was stellar, recording a .261 batting average with 33 home runs, 106 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases. Jon Morosi on MLB Network would say that he believes it’s “more likely” that Abrams gets traded rather than signing an extension with the Nationals.
“I do believe that the Nationals would love to extend C.J. Abrams, but he has played so well of late that that number has kept going up and up, and it’s a very interesting offseason in general, because so many of the top young shortstops in our game are available via trade to varying extents,” Morosi said.

Morosi would speak on the high value there is for shortstops in the MLB and how there aren’t many in free agency, as a team would need to make a trade. With the amount of versatility Abrams brings to a team in being able to play anywhere, he can play anywhere, with the insider alluding to the New York Yankees as a team that could use him
“You look around at the number of teams that need a shortstop,” Morosi said. “I would even start with the team in the Bronx that could potentially look for again, maybe not playing at shortstop because you got [George] Lombard, but a middle infielder. Abrams fits so many teams in so many different ways.”
Morosi would add that if Abrams were to sign an extension with the Nationals, it would have to come with reassurance that he’ll primarily play shortstop. It remains to be seen if Washington ends up keeping Abrams long-term or trading him for what could be a massive haul in return.
