The New York Yankees could look at an out-of-the-box option to fill their void at first base in 2025.
The Yankees declined the team option for Anthony Rizzo, leaving them without a starting first baseman at the beginning of the offseason. Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, and Paul Goldschmidt are among some of the top available free-agent options, but one former Yankee could fill in at the position as well. Could Gary Sanchez be a fit for the Bronx Bombers?
Sanchez spent the first seven years of his career with the Yankees. He made his first appearance with the team in 2015. Sanchez appeared in 53 games the following year and had one of the best stretches of any player that year. He hit 20 home runs and drove in 42 runs while producing 3.0 wins above replacement and finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting.
Sanchez was named to the All-Star Game in 2017 and won a Silver Slugger at catcher. He set career highs with 90 RBIs and a 4.0 WAR that season. Sanchez hit a personal-best 34 homers in 2019 while being selected to his second All-Star Game.

The Yankees traded the catcher to the Minnesota Twins after the 2021 season. He has bounced around the league since then.
Sanchez played 89 games in 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 37 runs. He played four games at first base and never recorded an error. The slugger has had fielding concerns behind the plate throughout his career, but a position change and a reunion with his old team may allow the the soon-to-be 32 year old to provide offensive production to the Yankees.
The Brewers declined their end of a mutual option for 2025, making Sanchez available. He likely won’t command a large contract, which would give the Yankees flexibility to make other moves this offseason.
