The Yankees have been tied to Eugenio Suarez since spring training. Now, the stakes are higher—and the list is longer.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks are open for business. And they’re making some serious talent available. Among them: All-Star third baseman Suarez, right-handers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, and first baseman Josh Naylor.
Every one of them is set to hit free agency at season’s end. And Arizona, per Nightengale, is “searching for young pitching in return.”
That could align neatly with the Yankees, who still have depth arms on the farm—and some major decisions to make on the left side of the infield.
Suarez is a name the Yankees have tracked for months. The 32-year-old has 31 homers already and would give them a legitimate third base upgrade. But it’s the inclusion of Gallen and Kelly that adds intrigue.
Gallen, a New Jersey native, has looked right at home under the NYC lights. He’s made strong starts at both Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, proving he can handle the moment. Kelly, a veteran innings-eater with playoff experience, could slot right into the middle of the rotation—something New York has needed with Max Fried nursing a blister and Clarke Schmidt done for the year.
A deal could go two ways: a targeted upgrade at third, or a bigger swing that brings in a pitcher, too. Either way, Arizona’s shopping list matches New York’s strengths—and the Yankees have the urgency.
If Brian Cashman wants to reinforce this roster for a deep October run, Arizona may be offering exactly what he needs.
