Cubs Announce Pedro Ramirez Update After Removal From Lineup

With Matt Shaw back on the club, the Cubs infield depth has looked a bit better. Unfortunately though, Ramirez is now dealing with a setback that makes their depth look questionable once again.

The Cubs announced via sideline reporter Taylor McGregor that Ramirez is dealing with lower back spasms, which is why he is out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Instead, Shaw drew the start at second base in his absence.

It is unclear when Ramirez initially suffered the injury, but it likely surfaced during pregame warmups leading to his removal from the lineup. Manager Craig Counsell will likely provide further updates on the plan for Ramirez after the game.

His injury comes at a bad time given Chicago has a chance to make it a closer division race with Milwaukee, but the obvious priority is making sure Ramirez does not suffer a more serious setback. For now it remains a day-to-day situation.
