The Chicago Cubs (81–60) appear set for a return to postseason baseball barring a late-season collapse, entering Saturday in sole possession of the top National League wild-card spot with under a month left in the regular season.

A huge reason for the team’s success this year has been the emergence of Pete Crow-Armstrong in his second big-league season. The 23-year-old outfielder was a force at the plate during the first half, earning his first All-Star selection and briefly leading the Cubs to first place in the NL Central while entering the NL MVP conversation.

Since then, the Milwaukee Brewers have taken the division lead, and Crow-Armstrong has struggled in the second half. In August, he posted a .160 batting average, .446 OPS and just one home run across 28 games.

Pete Crow-Armstrong Injury Update

Things got worse Saturday against the Washington Nationals when Crow-Armstrong fouled a ball off his right knee in the bottom of the sixth inning. Manager Craig Counsell removed the young outfielder in the top of the seventh, replacing him with Kevin Alcantara in the outfield.

Moments later, the Cubs announced that Crow-Armstrong had exited with a right knee contusion.

“Cubs announce Pete Crow-Armstrong left today's game with a right knee contusion,” wrote Zoe Grossman of Marquee Sports Network.

If Crow-Armstrong were to miss extended time, it would be a major development for Chicago. Despite his recent slump, his overall offensive numbers remain strong (.253/.291/.494 with 28 homers, 85 RBIs, 83 runs) and his contributions down the stretch are expected to be significant.

He also has been elite defensively (19 outs above average via Statcast) and on the base paths (32 stolen bases), continuing to provide value even when the bat cools off.

With Kyle Tucker sidelined since Tuesday due to left calf soreness, the Cubs’ outfield depth is especially thin right now.

Crow-Armstrong’s availability will be monitored closely as he figures to play a key role in Chicago’s postseason run and long-term future.
