The Chicago Cubs (80–60) are looking to pick up momentum heading into the postseason, with offseason blockbuster trade acquisition Kyle Tucker’s availability being a huge part of the team’s success.

The 28-year-old superstar has had a rollercoaster first season in Chicago. After earning an All-Star selection with an excellent first half, Tucker’s power numbers disappeared in the second half, leading to boos at Wrigley Field for his performance. The Cubs subsequently revealed Tucker had been dealing with a fractured right hand since June.

Tucker has returned to form at the plate recently, posting a .400 batting average, .489 on-base percentage, 1.289 OPS and four home runs over his last 11 games.

Kyle Tucker Injury Update

Unfortunately, that momentum came to a halt when Tucker exited Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with left calf tightness and has not appeared in game action since.

The Cubs had hoped Tucker could return as the designated hitter over the weekend, but manager Craig Counsell announced that his calf has not improved and the team may need to brace for an IL stint.

“Update from Craig Counsell after the Cubs win today: Tucker’s calf is no better. Tomorrow is a ‘big day’ re his progress. Can probably read that as an IL stint if he’s not improving,” wrote ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

This is a disappointing development for Chicago, as Tucker’s availability is crucial not only for the postseason but also for the Cubs’ slim chances of catching the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.

Tucker’s hot streak at the plate has now been derailed, and the timing is especially unfortunate as he’s set to enter unrestricted free agency this offseason. Proving he’s a superstar over the final month—rather than missing time due to injury—would have boosted his value, with projections suggesting a deal north of $400 million.

Tucker’s injury will be something to monitor closely in the final month of the regular season.
