As the Chicago Cubs try to go on a deep playoff run, they’ll be relying on Danny Palencia to a lock down closer in the ninth inning. But that can’t happen if he isn’t on the mound.
On Sunday though, Chicago activated Palencia off of the 15-day injured list, the team announced. In turn, Yacksiel Rios has been designated for assignment.
Palencia had been on the IL since mid-April with a lat strain. After making a rehab appearance at Triple-A on Friday, Chicago’s closer is now ready to make his return to the majors. The Cubs will still be paying close attention to Palencia as the last thing they want is an injury setback.
The right-hander hasn’t allowed an earned run over the five innings he has pitched in 2026. Palencia also holds a 5/2 K/BB ratio and converted a save. Now back healthy, the Cubs will be quick to had the ball to the righty if they hold a slim lead in the ninth.
Over his 54 appearances in 2025, Palencia put up a 2.91 ERA and a 61/16 K/BB ratio while recording 22 saves. The 26-year-old has proven himself to Chicago and is poised to man the ninth inning for the foreseeable future barring a drastic change.
Palencia’s return comes at a crucial time for the Cubs with many of their pitchers on the injured list. Six pitchers in Chicago’s bullpen are currently on the IL. The right-hander won’t be able to do everything on his own, but getting their closer back should bring some stability to the Cubs’ bullpen.
Palencia will look to prove he is fully past his injury and earn a save next time his team gets the opportunity.
