Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele has taken another step in his long-awaited return as he works toward a potential return before the 2026 season ends.
Steele has rejoined the Cubs in Phoenix, Arizona, and is scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday and Friday at the club’s spring training complex in Mesa. If his arm responds well, he could begin a minor league rehab assignment.
The update was reported by Chicago Tribune Cubs reporter Meghan Montemurro, who shared Steele’s comments on X. In the post, Steele said, “It’s been a long road & feels really good to get towards the end of that tunnel,” while discussing his recovery and the next steps in his throwing program.

“It’s been a long road & feels really good to get towards the end of that tunnel.”
Steele has endured a lengthy recovery after undergoing left elbow surgery in April 2025. His attempted comeback this year was delayed by a flexor strain during spring training, followed by another setback that required a PRP injection.
The left-hander’s last full season showed why his potential return matters. In 2023, Steele went 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 starts, earning his first All-Star selection and finishing fifth in NL Cy Young voting.
With limited time remaining in the regular season, the Cubs are unlikely to build Steele back to a traditional starter’s workload. Instead, he could provide a high-leverage option out of the bullpen if he completes his rehab without another setback.
That role could give Chicago an experienced postseason weapon while protecting Steele from an aggressive workload. His ability to cover multiple innings would also give manager Craig Counsell another way to navigate difficult playoff matchups.
The Cubs entered Tuesday 76-56 and second in the NL Central, while also holding a strong position in the National League Wild Card race. With October approaching, Steele’s progress could become an important part of Chicago’s postseason plans.
