Cubs lose Daniel Palencia to injured list

The Chicago Cubs were forced to switch things up in the bullpen before Tuesday’s contest against the Colorado Rockies. It was announced hours before the start of the contest that relief pitcher Daniel Palencia is going to the injured list.

Reports indicate the 26-year-old right-hander is being placed on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation. The Cubs announced they have recalled Gavin Hollowell to replace Palencia on the roster.

“Roster update: Gavin Hollowell recalled. Daniel Palencia placed on 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation,” said the Cubs.

Palencia suffered the injury during Chicago’s 5-4 win over Colorado on Monday. He finished that contest after one inning, recording three strikeouts while allowing one walk and zero earned runs.

This is a tough blow to the Cubs, as Palencia is arguably having the best season of his career so far. Through 16.2 innings pitched so far in the 2026 campaign, the four-year veteran owns a 2.70 ERA (career-best) and 1.380 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and three saves. This is Palencia’s second injury this year, as he previously missed time due to an oblique issue.

Hollowell would ideally be a short-term option in the bullpen while the Cubs await Daniel Palencia’s possible return this season. Gavin Hollowell has only appeared in one game this year, and it was one to forget. He rejoins the Cubs’ bullpen with a career 5.94 ERA and 1.585 WHIP with 52 strikeouts.

With Palencia out, the Cubs will likely rely on Phil Maton as the closer for now. Caleb Thielbar may get some save opportunities as well. Ultimately, it will be up to manager Craig Counsell to make those decisions.
