The Chicago Cubs are fresh off of a very disappointing loss to the NL Central rival Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. After a solid all-around regular season, the Cubs were clearly still missing some important pieces that caused their season to come to an end.
Jed Hoyer was heavily criticized for not having an aggressive approach to the 2025 MLB trade deadline. Entering the offseason, it will be interesting to see just how aggressive the Cubs choose to get.
Kyle Tucker will be the first question that needs to be answered this offseason. Chicago could still end up re-signing him, but the expectation is that Tucker will head elsewhere. If he does leave town, the Cubs will need to figure out a way to replace him.
Keeping that in mind, a surprising suggestion has been mentioned for Chicago to consider.
Robert Murray, an MLB insider for FanSided, mentioned the Cubs as a potential landing spot for Philadelphia Phillies' free agent slugger Kyle Schwarber.
"If you’re the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants or any other franchise looking to compete for a World Series, you add Schwarber and don’t think twice," Murray wrote.
Schwarber is coming off of a monster season with the Phillies. He played in 162 games, hitting 56 home runs to go along with 132 RBI. The 32-year-old also compiled a slash line of .240/.365/.563.
Of course, Schwarber started his MLB career with Chicago. He was a fan favorite and fans were extremely disappointed when he left town the first time around. Bringing him back would be something the fan base would love to see.
Making a move to sign Schwarber would not come cheap. He would be able to replace Tucker, but not join Tucker. If Tucker leaves, the door to signing Schwarber could swing open for the Cubs.
Expect to hear a lot of rumors surrounding Chicago as the offseason gets underway. Schwarber may not be an extremely likely option, but he's at least worth keeping an eye on for the Cubs.
