Cubs Miss on Tanner Scott as Dodgers Get Richer

Entering the MLB offseason, LHP Tanner Scott was widely viewed as the best closing option on the market. Knowing he was going to command a huge contract, plenty of teams threw their hats in the ring, including the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately, the Cubs came up short and Scott has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers

Scott will earn $72 million over the four years, averaging $18 million per season. The lefty will earn an elite amount of money as indicated by Jeff Passan. Although a potentially alarming amount of money for a reliever, Scott has been virtually unhittable over the last few seasons. However, the story here for Cubs fans is that the Cubs came up short once again.

Unfortunately, the Dodgers are spending like mad men, making other fanbases around the league irritated because their own clubs don't spend like that. In the case of the Cubs, missing out on Scott hurts as they continue to try and improve their roster.

Per ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the Cubs were the other finalist and their offer was in the ballpark of what the Dodgers offered. Ultimately, it sounds like Scott took the better offer and the opportunity to join the Dodgers' super team.

Now that Scott is off the market, the rest of the remaining bullpen options, especially closers, should start signing. Names like Carlos Estevez, Kyle Finnegan, and Kirby Yates will be the next focus for the league and potentially the Cubs. Expect the reliever market to really start moving over the last 10+ days of January. With less than a month until pitchers and catchers report to spring training sites, relievers will want to be under contract very soon.
