Cubs MLB Draft 2026: Rounds 6-10

The Chicago Cubs have made the 2026 MLB Draft all about pitchers and a few sluggers. In rounds 6-10, all five picks were pitchers. That said, here are the players selected on the first day of the 2026 MLB Draft:

Without further ado, here is how the Cubs faired in rounds 6-10.

Round 6, Pick 188: RHP Isaac Morton, Minnesota

The 172nd-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline, RHP Isaac Morton is a nice addition for the Cubs in the sixth round out of the University of Minnesota. Morton spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Texas A&M, but dealt with injuries. He transferred back to his home state of Minnesota and had a solid first full collegiate season.

Morton has a funky arm slot, allowing his fastball to have some sink and run while sitting 93-95 mph. He can get to 97, and has a really nice sweeping slider, just what the Cubs like. He also has a low-90s cutter and an average-at-best changeup to go with it.

Morton has solid size, and the breaking stuff must wow the Cubs. He struck out 63 batters in 60.2 innings and 13 starts, along with a 3.26 ERA. The Cubs are betting on the stuff and their famous pitch lab with Morton.

Round 7, Pick 217: LHP Cole Tryba, UC Santa Barbera

The Cubs have never shied away from taking college relievers. In the seventh round of the 2026 MLB Draft, they did just that, selecting LHP Cole Tryba from UC Santa Barbera.

Tryba made one start in 2026, but appeared in 16 games. He narrowly missed making the rotation, but was an important piece out of the pen. Tryba possesses a low-90s fastball with mid-90s potential, in addition to a mid-70s slider and a low-80s changeup. The slider is a big whiffs pitch, which fits the profile the front office likes.

In just 43.2 innings of work in 2026, Tryba fanned 57 batters and only allowed 14 walks. He could be a funky lefty out of the Cubs’ bullpen in the not-so-distant future.

Round 8, Pick 247: RHP Lance Williams, Maryland

The love for pitchers who can start and come out of the bullpen is ever present in the Cubs’ front office. In the eighth round, the Cubs selected RHP Lance Williams from the University of Maryland.

Williams was a starter, having started eight games in 2026, but found more success out of the bullpen later in the season. The 6.16 ERA is deceiving, but a 98 mph fastball and 69 strikeouts over 57 innings of work appears to be the formula Chicago is looking for.

Given the success out of the pen late in the year, Williams figures to be a flamethrower out of the pen who can provide big swing-and-miss stuff.

Round 9, Pick 277: RHP Chase Meyer, West Virginia

The story remains the same in the ninth round. Another relief pitcher joins the organization as the Cubs selected RHP Chase Meyer out of West Virginia. Meyer only threw 3.1 innings in 2026, because he was dismissed from the program. Meyer reportedly was overheard questioning coaching decisions, and after an indefinite suspension was ultimately dismissed entirely from the program.

With this pick, the Cubs know Meyer has no other option and he’ll probably sign for next to nothing. Despite the odd dismissal, Meyer has good stuff. He fanned 63 batters in just 48 innings in 2025.

The Cubs found another righty for cheap in the mid rounds of the draft.

Round 10, Pick 307: RHP Luke Alwood, Seattle

Another pick, another right-handed collegiate pitcher with wipe out potential. Alwood never posted insane numbers at Seattle University, but has great size (6’5″) and features a really good slider. His fastball sits low-to-mid-90s, but the Cubs love guys with wipeout sliders.

This pick feels like another opportunity to save some money, as the senior is set to graduate. If the Cubs can do so, they’ll have plenty of swipes at players from high school in the final 10 rounds of the draft.
