The Chicago Cubs and second baseman Nico Hoerner recently came to an agreement on a six-year, $141 million contract extension. Chicago is building around a core of players, as the team also recently signed star outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to a long-term deal. Hoerner commented on his contract extension on Sunday, via Marquee Sports Network.

"I've done an extension here before," Hoerner said. "From early on in my career I felt like it was a place that was different. The more that I've been fortunate to play in the major leagues, you know, I don't go anywhere else wishing or wondering if it would be a better option.

"This is where I want to be. I feel so strongly about the direction of this organization right now and the success ahead of us. I'm really excited to make the most of it."

The Cubs have built a young core of players over the years. Now they are attempting to keep those players while also building around them. For example, bringing in Alex Bregman this past offseason gave the core another veteran leader.

The Cubs are in a good position overall. Horner should be able to impact winning for years to come after signing his contract extension.

Hoerner, 28, has become one of the better second baseman in all of MLB. While he has yet to earn an All-Star selection, Horner has won two Gold Gloves and he finished 19th in National League MVP voting in 2025.

He is an old-school player in a lot of ways, as Hoerner does not offer much power from the right side of the plate. Rather, he is a contact-first hitter who plays good defense and runs well. In 2025, Horner slashed .297/.345/.394 across 156 games played. He added 29 doubles and 29 stolen bases while earning his second career Gold Glove.

He is a productive player. In today's game, power goes a long way. With that being said, stars who are not true power hitters have become rare, which makes them quite valuable. Hoerner's defense and speed only help matters.

Chicago is building something special. The Cubs are looking to win their first World Series since the 2016 campaign. With their up and coming core and star-power on the roster, perhaps the Fall Classic will return to Wrigley Field sooner rather than later.
