The Chicago Cubs have a three-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the NL Central, and outfielder Seiya Suzuki is a big reason why. The 30-year-old is slashing .274/.333/.577 with a team-high 14 homers (tied with outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong) and a MLB-high 49 RBI through 50 games played.

Suzuki is on a seven-game hitting streak and has hits in 11 of his last 12 contests. The 6-foot, 182-pounder also has three-plus RBI in three of his last six.

Suzuki's .910 OPS ranks 13th in baseball, and he's tied for eighth in homers. The fourth-year veteran was named the NL Player of the Week on Tuesday, and the Cubs celebrated on social media.

"Over the last 7 days, Seiya led MLB in batting average [.480], slugging percentage [1.000], and OPS [1.552]," they announced.

Suzuki is on pace to smash his personal-highs of 21 homers and 74 RBI in a season.

The right-hander played in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league from 2013-21, earning five All-Star selections. Chicago then signed him to a five-year, $85 million deal in 2022. He's currently slashing .278/.352/.483 with 69 homers and 242 RBI over 431 career games.

The Cubs will try to get their fifth straight series win when they host the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. They beat the latter club 3-1 on Monday, and have one more game against them on Thursday.

After that, Chicago will host the Cincinnati Reds before hitting the road to face the Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Cubs are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets for second in the NL standings, 1.5 games behind the Phillies.
