Cubs Recall Nate Pearson, DFA Genesis Cabrera on Saturday

The Chicago Cubs made a rare roster move ahead of their matchup with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Apparently having seen enough of LHP Genesis Cabrera, the team decided to move on from the veteran by designating him for assignment. In his place, the team recalled RHP Nate Pearson from Triple-A Iowa.

The veteran left-hander was off to a strong start with the Cubs after signing a major-league deal with the team at the end of May. Cabrera was previously DFA'd by the New York Mets, leading to his arrival in Chicago. However, Cabrera's last three games are what really hurt him. Carrying a 3.21 ERA before his last three appearances, Cabrera allowed seven earned runs in 3.0 innings of work his last three times out, ballooning his ERA to 8.68 in just 9.1 innings of work.

Now that Cabrera is likely done with the Cubs, and could possibly sign elsewhere as he did in Chicago, Nate Pearson gets a chance with the big club. The righty was really good at the end of last season, but struggled early in 2025 and was demoted. However, he's carrying a 2.22 ERA over 19 appearances in Iowa.

Although his walk number is high, with 15 in 24.1 innings of work, Pearson has earned another chance to showcase what the organization and fans saw at the end of the 2024 campaign.
